Bio

I am Jie Zhu, the third generation of a Beijing native. From a young age, my parents always inspired me to do my best no matter what I pursue. I was instilled with the notion that one earns respect through hard work, sense of pride, and accommplishment. Therefore, no matter what I do and no matter where I am , I always go all out to be the best.

After receiving my first BA in English in 1994 I started to work for USDA Beijing Office as a Translator & Interpreter. I am very grateful to everyone with whom I have worked with in that office. They have all played a positive role in fostering my personal development and helping to build my career. I want to give a special 'Thank You' to Ms. Claudine Brenner and Agricultural-Minister Counselor Mr. Bill Brant for their training and guidance. Through their recognition I was promoted three times and reached the glass ceiling of the locally hired Chinese translator and interpreter at the age of 27.

In 2000 I decided to open a new chapter in my life by accepting Stillwell Scholar Committee's offer to come to the United States to pursue a Master's degree in Conference Interpretation at the Graduate School of Translation and Interpretation of Monterey Institute of International Studies, Monterey, California. I owe a great debt to the Stillwell Scholarship Committee which made my dream come true. From that point on, I have been more determined to do my part to serve as a bridge for cross-culture communication.

While I was pursuing my first Master's degree from 2000 to 2002, I worked at the Center for Non-Proliferation Studies as a translator as well as a Chinese instructor at the Custom Language Services, where I received great evaluation from the students. In addition, I also worked as a Chinese instructor for the Winter Intensive Language Program.

Right after receiving my first Master's degree, I was hired as an Assistant Professor to teach Mandarin Chinese by the Defense Language Institute Foreign Language Center (www.dliflc.edu). I have been a Team Leader since 2004. I was elected a Representative at the Academic Senate in December 2004, representing over 130 faculty members from my school. I received a Provost Teaching Excellence Award in December 2005 and was selected to be the Department Chair for Chinese Department C in May 2006.

In February 2007 I was nominated and elected to be the Vice President of the Academic Senate.
